Scripture: Isaiah 1: 1; 10-17 Perhaps you’ve heard about the woman who woke up one morning, rolled over and told her husband: “I’m not going to church this morning. I don’t want to go.” “But honey,” her husband replied, “you have to go. You’re the pastor.” In twenty-first-century, postmodern, western culture, corporate (or congregational) worship is one of the spiritual practices in greatest decline. And, let’s admit, congregational worship appears to take a real kick in the teeth in the opening chapter of the Book of Isaiah. Not only does God not delight in the worship of these ancient Israelites. God hates it!

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23 Sometimes life is hard. Actually, the older I get, I feel like there are more and more hard days. But even kids, who don’t have to worry about bills and taxes and what to make for dinner, still have hard days, they’re just hard differently. But I bet most of us can understand where the author of today’s text is coming from when he talks about toiling under the sun, literally or metaphorically. By Tracey Leslie
Scripture: Luke 11: 1-13 Decades ago, when I was in seminary and a student pastor, a little girl in the church’s pre-school asked me what Jesus looked like. I paused and began to carefully explain that we didn’t really know because there weren’t cameras in Jesus’ time. But another little girl interrupted our exchange, confidently announcing, “Well, I know what he looks like ‘cause there’s a picture in my Bible.” How do you imagine Jesus? Oh, I don’t mean “does he look like a first-century Palestinian Jew in your mind’s eye?” But rather, what is your image of God? |
