COMMUNITY OUTREACH POSITION

Trinity United Methodist Church (www.trinitylafayette.org) in Lafayette, Indiana is seeking to fill a part-time (averaging 15 hours/week) Outreach position (flexible schedule).  This position will encompass three areas:
  • Direct personal engagement in the communit
  • The Arts

 Trinity is a downtown congregation seeking to make greater inroads in the downtown community; a community currently experiencing significant residential growth.  We are an historic church structure and are located within a block of Tippecanoe Arts Federation and several local art studios.  We are a reconciling congregation with significant socio-economic diversity.  Our vision is “growing in love and service through relationships with God and community.”  Our theological beliefs can be found at: http://www.trinitylafayette.org/beliefs.html  At Trinity, story/narrative is the model we utilize for evangelism, discipleship, and relationship building.  Applicants must feel comfortable working within this story model, as well as supporting and promoting the theological beliefs of Trinity.

Primary duties associated with this position include:
  • Establishing/developing relationships with downtown residents, businesses, and other organizations in the neighborhood through direct engagement, individual and group gatherings
    • Having a familiarity with Trinity’s ministries (particularly Fusion http://www.trinitylafayette.org/fusion.html) that are most conducive to community engagement 
    • Connecting community contacts with current church folks at various ministry events, including worship
    • Maintain a working contact list for individuals, organizations, and businesses
  • Connecting with local artists to integrate artwork into worship and to design and direct special events featuring art exhibits both indoors and on our lawn
  • Attendance at bi-monthly staff meetings

Applicant Requirements:
  • Of highest importance will be a candidate who is excited to connect personally with individuals and organizations and, in doing so, demonstrates authenticity, good listening skills, and compassion
  • A strong faith and a willingness to share one’s relationship with Jesus and beliefs about the church in ways that are sincere and respectful; in ways that promote honest, open dialogue​
  • Strengths in written and verbal communication
  • An adequate understanding of, and connections to, the art community so as to promote the arts and highlight Trinity as a congregation that appreciates the arts and artists
This position includes reimbursement for approved expenses related to outreach.  It also offers the opportunity to work creatively and collaboratively with a strong ministry staff.

​COMMUNICATIONS POSITION

This is a part-time (averaging 5-10 hours/week) position with flexible hours and the option of mainly remote work. 

Primary duties associated with this position include:
  • Implement a communications strategy based on communications assessment recommendations (including website, social media, print material, and other media forms) that is outward focused and effective in helping us capture the attention of those not currently engaged in our congregation.
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings
  • Developing a familiarity with Trinity’s ministries that are outward focused (particularly Fusion http://www.trinitylafayette.org/fusion.html) and most conducive to community engagement; as well as providing follow-up or additional information for those expressing an interest in or questions about the church as appropriate
  • Maintain a working contact list for individuals, organizations, and businesses, including media contacts
  • Edit and maintain a repository of images, tools, press releases, and designs
  • Assist Trinity employees and team leaders in communication strategies for various outreach programs and events
 
Applicant Requirements:
  • Those with education or experience in communications and public relations
  • Skills in social media and online communication strategies, including working with local media to promote events
  • Skills adequate to create effective promotional designs (experience with Publisher and Canva)
  • Strengths in written and verbal communication

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC POSITION

REPORT TO:    The Senior Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee
TIME COMMITMENT:    Approximately 8 hours per week 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Director of Music is responsible for weekly worship music and for the ongoing development, implementation, and growth of other artistic expressions of worship. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Selects worship music consistent with the message and culture of Trinity UMC and in consideration of the Christian year.
  2. Choose seasonally appropriate hymns, choral music, and liturgical music for traditional worship, including a wide variety of music resources.
  3. Direct the adult choir or appropriate ensemble by selecting music, leading rehearsals, and fostering musical excellence.
  4. Schedule, prepare, and rehearse instrumental & vocal soloist/ensembles as needed for Sunday worship or special services.
  5. Coordinate with other musicians when accompaniment is needed.
  6. Select appropriate praise chorus for the start of morning worship and make music available to the organist.
  7. Work with the Senior Pastor in planning meaningful selections for worship.
  8. Recruit, audition, and select talent for worship, special events, and church programs.
  9. Coordinate or plan events with local musicians to increase Trinity’s artistic engagement with the community. 
  10. Submit articles or announcements regarding the music program to the Communications person.  Collaborate with the Communications person to appropriately promote/publicize music/artist outreach events.
  11. Coordinate use of Trinity’s space for local artists to perform or display their work when the art and music styles are appropriate.
  12. Plan & administer music and worship budget.  Submit budget request to Governing Board by October 1 of each year.
  13. Maintain music library and schedule appropriate tuning and maintenance of musical instruments.
  14. Supervision of music staff and sound team, including monthly submission of time sheet for accompanist and payment requests for guest musicians.  It is the sole responsibility of the Director of Music and Worship Arts to track accompanist hours so as not to exceed budget allocation.
  15. Handbook policies apply to this position as appropriate, including email response time relating to official church business.

QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Degree in music or fine arts required
  • Demonstrated success in conducting ensembles
  • Demonstrated success in planning musical and artistic events that connect with the community
  • Familiarity with the rhythm of the Christian year and working with clergy to coordinate with sermon series or seasonal themes
  • Ability to network and recruit local talent
  • Piano skills adequate for rehearsal required
  • This individual must be committed to carrying out Trinity mission and vision (see below) and seek to achieve this mission and vision through his/her ministry area.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIST POSITION
  • Play organ (or piano when appropriate) for weekly Sunday worship service.  Service music includes, but is not limited to: praise song, prelude, offertory, postlude, hymns and other musical responses.
  • Having first refusal rights for all weddings and funerals taking place at Trinity.
The Director of Music is the organist’s direct supervisor.  This position requires the ability to work well and collaboratively with the Director of Music and volunteer musicians and staff.


DIRECTOR OF WORSHIP ARTS JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Worship Arts is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, and growth of periodic expressions of drama, dance, visual and other artistic expressions of worship.

  1. Coordinate displays of visual arts in the GREAT Room (a congregational gathering space), on altar, and lawn.
  2. Coordinate or plan events with local musicians and artists to increase Trinity’s artistic engagement with the community. 
  3. Submit articles or announcements regarding the arts program to the Communications person.  Collaborate with the Communications person to appropriately promote/publicize music/artist outreach events.
  4. Coordinate use of Trinity’s space for local artists to perform or display their work when the art and music styles are appropriate.
  5. Plan & administer the art’s budget.  Submit budget request to Governing Board by October 1 of each year.
  6. Handbook policies apply to this position as appropriate, including email response time relating to official church business.
QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Degree in arts preferred
  • Demonstrated success in planning musical and/or artistic events that connect with the community
  • Ability to network and recruit local talent
