WEDDING GUIDELINES
Bridal Consultants
Outside bridal consultants are not permitted to assist at the church with your ceremony. Trinity UMC has an experienced wedding coordinator on staff. She will be able to assist, advise and direct you through every aspect of your wedding.
Children in the Wedding Party
Very young children are unable to understand the significance of the wedding ceremony and may cause distractions. We strongly suggest that children under the age of four not be included in your wedding party.
Church Facilities
The sanctuary seats 450 people. Rooms are available in the church building for the bridal party to use for dressing. Handicapped access is available on the north and south side of the building. Your guests may park in the church parking lot on the corner of 5th and North Streets. The church mailing address is: 509 North Street Lafayette, Indiana 47901.
Clergy
Guest ministers must be ordained and approved by Trinity's pastor/s.
Communion
If you wish to include the celebration of communion in your ceremony, please discuss this with your pastor and wedding coordinator. You will be responsible for providing the grape juice and bread.
Counseling
We require all wedding couples to attend pre-marital counseling sessions. Counseling can be obtained from the Trinity ministers or through a licensed therapist. If a therapist, a letter of successful completion is required from the therapist.
Decorations
The sanctuary has a beauty of its own that lends itself to simplicity. Any decorations should not hide the cross on the altar or block entrances for the bridal party, pastor or guests. Do not use tacks or tape on any furniture. Nothing can be attached to the candelabra. Chancel and altar furniture may not be moved.
Potted plants, silk, dried or fresh flowers can be used. If you wish to leave flowers for use on Sunday following your wedding, please let our coordinator know of your plans. An announcement of your wedding will be in the Sunday bulletin.
Trinity can provide a pair of floor-length seven branch candelabra for a small fee. All candles must be removed by a Trinity staff member. The fire Marshall does not permit candles past the altar.
Marriage License
Couples must go to the county clerk’s office to get a marriage license. You must obtain your license in the Indiana county in which you reside; only one of you needs to live in that county. Please check with your county clerk’s office in advance to learn all requirements, such as identification needed, cost, and length of validity.
Music
At Trinity the organ and/or piano may be used for your wedding music. If you would like an organist, the wedding coordinator will schedule one for you. The organist can also play the piano. Organist fees vary depending on your choice of music and other considerations. Recorded music can also be used. Please consult with our wedding coordinator about your music selections.
Photography
Pictures may be taken before and/or after the service. No flash is to be used during the ceremony. Please be sure your photographer is aware of this in advance, so he or she is prepared with the proper equipment.
Videotaping is permitted but must be done in a non-intrusive, stationary manner. Filming from a pre-determined location in the balcony is preferred, not the choir loft or altar area. Only natural lighting may be used.
Substances
Rice and metallic confetti cannot be thrown on church property. No alcoholic beverages may be served on church premises. A no smoking rule applies for all areas within the church and church entrance area.
Wedding Programs
You are responsible for printing your wedding programs. Your pastor or wedding coordinator will help you determine the order of service.
