By Rev. Tracey Leslie
Happy New Year! If you were in worship last Sunday, you might remember me saying that the church has its own calendar year and that last week marked the end of the Christian year. So, it’s only logical that today begins a new year as we embark on the journey of Advent: as we prepare our hearts and minds to remember and celebrate the coming of Christ. The Christian year begins today with an overview of history, beginning at the end.

Today is the last Sunday of the year. Now by that I don’t mean the last day of the year 2021. Fear not, you haven’t slept through Christmas… although some of us may wish we could sleep through this year’s holiday gift-purchasing season. What I mean is that this Sunday marks the end of the Christian calendar year. You see, as Christians, we have a distinctive way of marking time that reflects our beliefs and our understanding of reality. Today is called “Christ the King” Sunday and as we worship this Sunday we celebrate our confidence as Christians that, when time has run its course – when we arrive at the end of time or the “end time” – Christ will return in glory to reign triumphant over all of heaven and earth. We trust, as Christians, that it is a sure thing. Each week as we pray together the Lord’s Prayer and ask for God’s Kingdom to come, it is this day – the day of Christ’s return – in which we ultimately hope. We trust that, at the end of time, Christ will return to earth and will finally and fully establish his reign – no longer will sin or evil or anything else challenge Christ’s good purposes. And so, our gathering on this “Christ the King” morning is a way of our bearing witness or testimony to the truth of time; we gather as God’s faithful to profess our trust in Christ’s return and in his reign as King over all of heaven and earth. We are the faithful witnesses to this truth.
