Scripture: 1 Kings 21:1-16 There is an old Bill Cosby comedy “bit” about a toddler who loves cookies. Ignoring the word “no” and caught dipping her hand into the cookie jar too often, mom moves the cookie jar to the top of the refrigerator, out of the toddler’s reach. But the toddler is determined. While mom and dad are in another room of the house, the little girl drags a kitchen chair across the floor and over to the refrigerator; climbs onto the chair, then onto the counter, and reaches up and into the cookie jar. Lucky for mom and dad, she’s too young to realize that sounds travels. Mom and dad hear the chair being drug and little feet hopping around. When dad enters the kitchen, he asks her, “What are you doing?” And she replies, “Getting you a cookie.” Dad responds, “I don’t want a cookie,” leading her to reply, “Then I’ll eat it.” It’s a funny story and a clever child.

Scripture: Philippians 4:8-9 Every invention, every social movement, every new business, every new work of art, began with a thought. Thoughts are powerful. This week I put out a Facebook call for clichés or quotes that affirm the power of our thoughts; the power of our mindset or attitude. One of my former Dayton youth gave this response: “If your mind can conceive it, and your heart can believe it, your body will achieve it.” By Pastor Tracey Leslie
Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24 This morning – as we continue this sermon series entitled “Response Ability” – we look at responsibility in relation to our physical assets. We live in a nation with lots of stuff. Most of us are trying to get more stuff hence the popularity of the bumper sticker: “the one who dies with the most toys wins.” But all that stuff and how we think about it impacts how we respond to one another. It impacts our response ability; the responsibility we embrace or defy toward others who may be lacking in stuff. |
