Scripture: Mark 8:27-38 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. "He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. By Pastor Tracey Leslie
Scripture: Mark 7:24-30 So, I wonder how many of you felt uncomfortable or even upset, by this morning’s gospel story and the exchange that takes place between Jesus and this Syrophoenician woman. This story doesn’t seem to present Jesus in a very good light, does it? I mean, we think of Jesus as a Savior who embodies compassion and gentleness. We certainly don’t think of Jesus as someone who goes around calling people “dogs” and appearing to harbor ethnic prejudice. So what are we to make of this story? |
